Storage of cakes with edible toppers largely depends on various factors like the material of the edible image, the cake icing, and humidity. Customers who have placed photo cakes into refrigerators for some time have reported contrasting experiences. Some customers have reported that refrigeration creates a slight tint to the edible image after some time. Others have mentioned that they stored their cakes with edible toppers in refrigerators and they turned out just fine. Humidity could be a factor, as could the icing / cake topping on which the edible image is placed.

You can apply Inkedibles Frosting Sheets to a variety of frostings such as Fresh Buttercream or Non-Dairy topping, Fondant, Marzipan, even Ice Cream. Frosting sheets do not adhere well to a high moisture base, such as whipped creams. Hard frostings, such as Royal Icing, Fondant or Marzipan will work if you apply a thin coating of a butter-cream, piping jelly or spray a fine mist of water below the sheet. If your frosting (such as butter-cream) has formed a crust, spray with a fine mist of water before applying the printed frosting sheet. DO NOT add extra moisture to non-dairy whipped toppings. These are perfect edible images for chocolate covered oreo cookies.

The best way to avoid the wet look is to ensure the printed icing sheets / cake toppers are applied to a cake at room temperature NOT a cake straight out of the fridge. Another major cause is keeping your cake in an air tight container which can result in your cake sweating and moisture developing on top of the icing sheet / cake topper.

As long as it is stored in a sealed ziplock bag, and out of direct sunlight and under regular room temperature, it can last good for weeks.

However, We do recommend these to be consumed as soon as possible.

Adding royal icing around the edible image (even if coming into contact with the edible image) is a common way of decorating and works just fine. The royal icing will cause a slight blurring/glazing at the point it comes into contact with the edible image, because there is moisture in the royal icing. This is less noticeable on the edges and therefore not much of an issue, and is in fact commonly done in order to blend the edible image into the cookie. However if you add royal icing on top of the edible image (for example, to the middle of the edible image itself), it could cause a distortion of the edible image due to the weight and moisture of the royal icing.
