Airbrushing is common with professional cake, but with a little knowledge any home baker can also learn how to apply airbrush designs on cakes. Using a small air compressor and an airbrush you can create colorful designs and impressive background effects in simple ways. Choose an airbrush with fine spray ability. Almost all your airbrushing needs fine spray to make the colors coming out evenly on the cake.
Begin with applying the icing to the cake but don’t add borders before the airbrushing is done. Then fill the color bottle on your airbrush with special food coloring intended for this purpose. Cover your workplace with old newspaper to avoid overspray and then place the cake on the top. Also keep a test board handy to test the spray for consistency before applying on the final product.
Hold the airbrush approximately four to five inches from the surface of the icing and using sweeping strokes apply the color evenly and lightly. It is recommended to apply three or four thin coats or layers, and then one thick coat. If you hold the airbrush too close to the icing surface, color can make a mess and mar the design on your project.
Make sure to clean your airbrush between changing of colors by running a little water through it. Use the test board nearby once again to examine color consistency before applying the new color to remove water traces from the airbrush, which can otherwise deform your design. Once you master the art you will notice that your airbrush will provide a deep rich hue to the designs on your cake.
